Harley Davidson Riders of Atlanta…Racism Is Alive & Thriving

There's no doubt, racism is alive and thriving in America. I'm a history junky. It doesn't matter whether it's a person, place or thing. If I find it interesting; I'll research it to study myself approved. Because knowledge is power and I want to share this with those who take the time to visit this website.

So, what's all the fuss about racism? Well as I'm confronted with it, I will give a depiction of the source so light might come from its exposure. I currently live in Georgia that's why I found it necessary to share my personal experience on this issue; matter of fact as resent as today I had someone spew some cowardly ignorant racist comment to a post of mine on a Facebook Page called Harley Davidson Riders of Atlanta.

During slavery Georgia was the number one state out of the nine southern states who didn't want slavery dismantled. Thomas Jefferson introduced a bill designed to end slavery, not all of the southern Founders were opposed to slavery. According to the testimony of Virginians James Madison, Thomas Jefferson, and John Rutledge, it was the Founders from North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia who most strongly favored slavery.

Yet, despite the support for slavery in those States, the clear majority of the Founders opposed this evil. For instance, when some of the southern pro-slavery advocates invoked the Bible in support of slavery, Elias Boudinot, President of the Continental Congress, responded:

"Even the sacred Scriptures had been quoted to justify this iniquitous traffic. It is true that the Egyptians held the Israelites in bondage for four hundred years . . . but . . . gentlemen you cannot forget the consequences that followed: they were delivered by a strong hand and stretched-out arm and it ought to be remembered that the Almighty Power that accomplished their deliverance is the same yesterday, today, and forever."

So, what's all the fuss about racism?

Ok, I joined this Facebook Page called Harley Davidson Riders of Atlanta. I posted a link that had my website information to promote education on Black Motorcycle Clubs and so much more. So Keith Robinson of Dallas, GA decided to respond to the link in a rather racist way. Am I shocked? No…however it fascinates me that the administrator of the Facebook Page hasn't blocked him yet.

I took time to go through all 177 member profiles in the group and discovered just by the pictures; I'm the only Black Harley Rider. Is that strange? Yes, because there are a lot of Black Harley Riders in Atlanta, GA. I'd like some feedback. Speak your mind, please.

Rush Limbaugh has ridden that pony with impunity. Such tastelessness is what is expected from someone who joked that he'd like to own an NFL franchise because he fancied owning some black men. Keith Robinson I bet this is your favorite radio personality.

The Right (racist) doesn't like the fact that there's a black man in the White House who isn't serving coffee, and the Left (racist) doesn't like the fact that there's a black man in the White House who's smarter than they are and who doesn't do what they order them to do.

I need your help again with this statement from racist. Now repeat after me, "Some of my best friends are "blacks." (As Donald Trump said). When racist are confronted about their actions that one of the things you can expect them to say; as if that's suppose to let them off the hook.

Since I'm living in the Peach State I'd like to know who's under that sheet. I don't have a problem with removing myself from those who think, act and feel this way about any people of color. I captured the comments to my post and you can read them below. I will reiterate, "There's no doubt, racism is alive and thriving in America".

I am in the business of creative communication. Ideas. Images. Shaping together thoughts, images and communications into stuff like Web applications, brands and the visual and sensual experiences that make memories and impressions. I have been at this business for a long time but that doesn't make it any easier to find the right idea. So what have I learned about creative that keeps me at my job and serving a lot of different clients? Namely, that perspiration leads to inspiration...

There have been a handful of occasions when the right concept just came to me. Like the scene in "Lust for Life" where Kirk Douglas (playing Vincent van Gogh) attacks a canvas then reveals a plein air masterpiece. But this is more movie myth than reality. If you ever read Letters to Theo, you get the other side of the story and the real struggle to come up with a style of his own. Then there was the sheer volume of work the artist actually did to get to that point of success. In other words Vincent worked his butt off.

Lucky for me, I knew from the history of visual art that creative breakthroughs are rarely instantaneous. Most artists lead a very workman-like existence like Picasso. He was know to be in his studio every day around 6am and spent the better part of his day at work in the studio. The result was a prolific career spanning over 13 thousand paintings and over 100,000 other handcrafted works.

Aside for putting the time into the work itself, one has to show up prepared to make the effort to do good creative work. You have to come in prepared and focused. I like to come in with both the schedule and my tasks up to date and the deck cleared.

Before I can contribute to good design and creative I have to know the background of the assignment or better yet, be part of the learning process for the objective. In my business this means some good investigative teamwork that will eventually live in a brief or document. It might be a persona study or even a video of real customers.

The point is time must be dedicated to understanding what the creative work is supposed to do in the context of experience. I have found more success when I am actually part of that process of intelligence gathering than when I am handed the discovery work. I think this is because the creative process takes time and my mind is working on the issues in the background while I am typically focused on something else.

Creative concepts take time. I have heard it called incubation time, described as ideation and the failure of it termed "writers' block". I think that making new connections and insights within various sets of data requires time to process and then reform the connections and filter out the obvious and most likely ideas that would not differentiate the creative work. However we describe it, it takes time and effort and filtering to get good work. Good creative is work.

It has taken me a moment to digest what has been happening on the road to riders who live in Georgia. With no exaggeration there has been since riding season started the middle of March seventeen bikers hurt and out of the seventeen at least 5 to 6 have died.

Now I thought about it and said this is not the time to blame anyone for how we're riding reckless out here and who may have been the mentor of these aggressive riders that promote this bad and unsafe behavior. Riders have to help Riders stay alive. We have a responsibility to each other to do whatever we have to do to keep someone alive another day.

I'm sorry to say 99% has been male and all sport bikes. So what's up? I am a victim of riding and allowing myself to let others push me beyond my limit and make a decision to get back on a bike that was unsafe and I could have died. That shit won't happen again. We don't want to be left behind or called soft cause we won't do the stunts and tricks others are doing.

I know we tend to get this intrepid mindset once we've had a few drinks or what else you use that is considered a mind or mood altering substance, to blast, do donuts, wheelies, fly between vehicles on the road…you know what I'm talking about. If this is what happens to you and you don't know your limit then damn it you don't need to ride when you are drinking. We can't be afraid to flatten tires, take keys, knock their ass out or whatever it takes to keep them alive another day.

This behavior is the most selfish thing you can do to your friends and family because you probably don't have insurance, 401K, savings or something stashed for a rainy day. Then here we go with all these fundraisers every damn week, why because most of the times it's for a person's selfish behavior why money needs to be raised to help offset the funeral cost.

I love everybody man and it's high time for clubs and riders to become accountable for this insidious behavior; the safety of their riders on the road. I was blown away this weekend we had seven riders down and 3 deaths from the seven. This shit ain't funny and it's getting real old too soon.

This is a suggestion that I brought up to another female rider about the Georgia Council deciding what the consequence should be to the club and the rider for acting a damn fool on two's. Since most of us are willing to change rather quickly when it hits us in our pockets; then fines are what I am proposing for their asses! If it appears to be consistent with a particular club, then black ball them or refuse to let them fly their colors until they have taken a safety course and have documentation that they've completed it successfully. We have to stay aware of motorists that are aggressive, on cell phones, texting or not knowing how to respond to us on the road.

You have to implement drastic measures for drastic times…it's that time. The dialog must start with finding the solution to keep riders alive this season and the seasons too come. We forget our bikes have been up from say December to March and we need to acclimate ourselves to the level we were in the previous season. Some ride all year and they don't get rusty but some of us do. Ride your ride and don't give a damn about what someone may think about you not wanting to lose your life.
